Suspect faces murder charges in slaying of five in Nevada

FERNLEY, Nev., May 15 (UPI) — Prosecutors said Wednesday they will seek open murder charges against a suspect in the slaying of five people Monday in and around Fernley, Nev.

Prosecutors said they would seek the charges against Jeremiah Diaz Bean, 25, who was booked Monday on burglary charges. Charges of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon would allow a court to convict Bean on a variety of charges, including first degree murder and manslaughter, the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal said.

Bean, who police said has admitted he is a gang member, had not been charged as of Wednesday afternoon in the shooting deaths of Robert Pape, 84; Dorothy Pape, 84; Lester Leiber, 69; and Angie Duff, 67, at a home in Fernley, and Eliazar Graham, 52, who was found dead at the Interstate-80 Mustang exit.

Lyon County Sheriff Allen Veil said a vehicle recovered at the scene of Graham’s killing belonged to the Papes. Authorities said Wednesday Bean stole the car, drove to the Mustang interstate exit where Graham was killed, and then drove back to the house in Graham’s vehicle.

Police arrested Bean after a resident of a home near Duff’s home, and not far from the Papes’ home, found Bean in his house and called police.

Bean may also be charged with arson, burglary, robbery, grand larceny and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Bail on the burglary charges was set at $50,000.
