UNITED NATIONS, May 15 (UPI) — The U.N. General Assembly condemned the Syrian government’s use of heavy weapons against its own people in a resolution Wednesday.

The resolution passed 107-12 with 59 abstentions, officials said in a statement. It was the fifth resolution on Syria adopted by the body since large demonstrations against the government of President Bashar Assad erupted in 2011.

Arab governments led the call for the new resolution. It also includes a call on governments to provide assistance to those coping with the flood of refugees from Syria to Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt and other countries in the region.

The U.N. said the Assad regime has engaged in “widespread and systematic gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms.” It called for a total stop to the use of violence in Syria.

The assembly described the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as “effective representative interlocutors needed for a political transition.”
