Father, son charged with violating laws preventing WMD proliferation

CHICAGO, May 6 (UPI) — A father and son were arrested for allegedly violating U.S. laws that prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the Justice Department said.

The father, a resident of Taiwan, and the son, who lives in a Chicago suburb, were tied to the supply of weapons machinery to North Korea, federal law enforcement officials said in a release.

Hsien Tai Tsai, also known as Alex Tsai, was arrested Wednesday in Tallinn, Estonia, while his son, Yueh-Hsun Tsai, also known as Gary Tsai, was arrested the same day at his home in Glenview, Ill.

Alex Tsai, 67, is in custody in Estonia pending a hearing to extradite him to the United States.

Both men were charged in federal court in Chicago with conspiring to defraud the United States in its enforcement of laws and regulations prohibiting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, money laundering and conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act by conspiring to evade the restrictions imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department on Alex Tsai and two of his companies by declaring the man and companies proliferators of weapons of mass destruction

Court documents said the Tsais, another individual and a network of companies were being investigated for exporting U.S.-made goods and machinery that could be used to produce weapons of mass destruction. The Justice Department said the Tsais and the individual are associated with at least three companies in Taiwan that either tried to buy or bought then export from the United States machinery used to fabricate metals and other materials with a high degree of precision.
