DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State (21-31, 4-11 Big 12) fell in its final road game of the season, 3-4, at Drake (29-19, 14-7 MVC) on Tuesday night. Erica Miller had two hits and an RBI for the Cyclones in the game.
Brittany Gomez singled to shortstop in the first at-bat of the game, coming around to score on Miller’s single down the right field line. Iowa State had an opportunity to add to its lead in the following frame, loading the bases with one out but Drake brought in reliever Rebekah Schmidt to secure the final two outs without allowing a run.
Lexi Slater singled to drive in the Cyclones’ second run of the game in the top of the third before a sac bunt from Sara Davison plated another run, unearned, for the 3-0 Iowa State lead.
Lindsey Vande Wall connected for Drake’s first hit of the contest with one out in the bottom of the third, singling to right and was erased from the bases on Sam West’s fielder’s choice hit to Cyclone third baseman Maddie Reese.
The Bulldogs broke through for all four of their runs of the night in the fifth, taking a one-run lead with RBI hits from Amy Pierce and Nicole Randel and an RBI-fielder’s choice from pinch hitter Zeah Peterson.
Schmidt (11-9) picked up the win in relief, throwing five and two-thirds innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits while walking one with no strikeouts.
Tori Torrescano (11-13) took the loss for Iowa State, charged with six hits and four runs in four and one-thirds innings. Torrescano walked one and fanned three.
Iowa State closes out the regular season next weekend, hosting Kansas, May 10-12. The first game of the series is slated for Friday at 4 p.m. CDT.
