Nurse injured in acid attack

MUMBAI, May 5 (UPI) — A nurse who had acid thrown at her face in Mumbai is in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit, her family said Sunday.

Preeti Rathi, 25, was traveling from New Delhi to Mumbai for a job as a nurse lieutenant at the Army Medical Hospital, the Indo-Asian News Service said.

When she got off a train in Mumbai Thursday, an unknown youth with his face covered hurled acid from a plastic water battle on her face.

Rathi suffered internal burns due to inhalation and consumption of the acid, and she has lost all vision in her right eye, doctors at Mumbai’s Masina Hospital said.

The Indian Railways is paying for her medical bills as the incident occurred on its property.

Preeti Rathi’s family said they are unsure if she will retain her job with the Army.

“We shall officially approach the army authorities in Mumbai Monday and present her case. Then it will be for them to decide,” the victim’s father, Amar Singh Rathi, said.

Police have released sketches of the unidentified attacker based on security footage and are continuing their investigation, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.
