New Delhi police expect bus gang-rape verdict in late May

NEW DELHI, May 5 (UPI) — The trial of six defendants charged with raping a woman on a bus in India will conclude at the end of the month, the head of the New Delhi police said Sunday.

Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar told the Indo-Asian News Service the proceedings were “almost 90 percent complete and judgment is expected by the end of May.”

The alleged attack occurred in mid-December. The woman was badly injured and died a few days later.

The attack quickly created international headlines and public outrage over the supposed lack of action by police. Kumar defended his response, saying two officers had been fired and New Delhi citizens were more confident about reporting sexual assaults.

“There is a 158-percent increase in rape case registration, 600 percent in molestation cases,” said Kumar, who repeated he had no intention of resigning. “These are not indicative of a rise in crimes but it shows women are now confident about going to police stations where a woman officer hears them and registers their complaints.”
