‘Iron Man 3’ opens very big at the box office

LOS ANGELES, May 5 (UPI) — “Iron Man 3,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, took in a whopping $175.3 million during the weekend.

It was the second highest North American opening in history, USA Today reported.

“Pain and Gain,” starring Mark Wahlberg and The Rock, was a very distant No. 2 with $7.6 million.

All studio estimates of gross box office receipts are via Box Office Mojo.

“42” was third with $6.21 million; “Oblivion” fourth with $5.797 million; “The Croods” fifth with $4.225 million; “The Big Wedding” sixth with $3.875 million; “Mud” seventh with $2.15 million; “Oz The Great and Powerful” eighth with $1.822 million; “Scary Movie 5” ninth with $1.435 million.

And “The Place Beyond the Pines” was 10th with $1.298 million.
