MASON CITY – A Mason City man has been arrested Thursday after two incidents that left a total of four victims.
According to police, officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence at the 100 block of 6th Street NW and arrested 33 year-old Brian Burkett of Mason City. Burkett was charged with class B felony first degree burglary, class C felony willful injury, two counts of aggravated domestic assault and one count of serious assault. The assault charges, police said, stem from a separate incident at a residence at the 1300 block of South Delaware Avenue involving three victims.
Burkett was transported via ambulance to North Iowa Mercy Medical Center for minor injuries; a source told NIT that Burkett was tazed as he was arrested. The source also told NIT that Burkett “was (at the 6th Street NW residence in the early morning hours Thursday) to get a TV from a person living in the basement and all of a sudden dude flipped and started stabbing a woman at the residence and then turned the knife on my friend’s boyfriend.” The source also indicated that up to three children were at the house at the time of the incident.
Burkett is now in the Cerro Gordo County Jail. He faces up to 25 years in prison and a $25,000 fine for the most serious charges.
Burkett is a convicted felon, most recently convicted in 2011 of drug possession charges. He still owes the court $3295.90 in fines and costs in that case. He has been charged with numerous other crimes.
