Brother, 5, accidentally kills sister, 2, with child’s rifle

22 cal rifleLEXINGTON, Ky., May 1 (UPI) — A 2-year-old Kentucky girl has been accidentally shot and killed by her 5-year-old brother while he was playing with a .22-caliber rifle, state police say.

The girl, Caroline Starks, was shot at her home in rural Cumberland County and was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported Tuesday.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said the children’s mother was home at the time of the shooting. He identified the gun as a Crickett, “a little rifle for a kid.”

White said the family did not realize a shell had been left in the rifle, which was kept in a corner of a room.

The shooting will be ruled accidental, White said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

I got my first gun for hunting when I was nine years old. 55 years ago guns weren’t that violent, and it’s a good thing to because I still have that gun. The ones I have now are locked up, I wouldn’t want them (guns) to hurt anybody. Every once in a while I think about selling them, but I’m afraid to open the safe because I’m sure that being locked up all these years have made them insane.

Ban the mother and the brother. They are dangerous.

You people say the same garbage everytime something like this happens. The truth is, you just can’t fight stupidity.

” The truth is, you just can’t fight stupidity.” Isn’t that what Katie and I said?

@ joao – No, it isn’t.

“ust another example of people who didn’t learn to” keep knives, guns and other dangerous things out of the reach of children

You are also right about that. But even if they are out of the reach of children, guns should not be left loaded if there are children in the home. The guns and ammo should be locked in separate places.

Just another example of people who didn’t learn to double check and triple check things!
