NIACC weekly release – April 9th, 2013

BASEBALL

What’s next: The NIACC baseball team hosts Marshalltown Community College Thursday in a nonconference doubleheader at Roosevelt Stadium in Mason City. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m.

Also, NIACC hosts Ellsworth Saturday and Sunday in an ICCAC 4-game series.

Last time out: NIACC (14-4 overall, 6-2 in the ICCAC) took 3 out of 4 games from Kirkwood last weekend. The Trojans dropped the first game 14-4 in six innings but won the next three games 8-2, 1-0 and 6-1.

Second to one: NIACC ranks second in NJCAA Division II teams with a .363 batting average. Western Oklahoma State College is the leader at .381.

Sophomore Tanner Unkel (Cedar Rapids, Ia.) leads the Trojans with a .411 batting average (6th in ICCAC). Sophomore Ryan Voves (Mason City, Ia.) is hitting .396 (8th in ICCAC), sophomore Max Waletich (Fairmont, Minn.) is hitting .386 (10th in ICCAC) and sophomore Robert Swenson (Mason City, Ia.) is hitting .375 (12th in ICCAC).

Change in plans: NIACC’s scheduled nonconference doubleheader Tuesday against Rochester Community and Technical College has been canceled and will not be made up. Also, Sunday’s ICCAC doubleheader against Ellsworth scheduled to be held in Iowa Falls will be played in Mason City.

SOFTBALL

What’s next: The NIACC softball team hosts Iowa Lakes in a ICCAC doubleheader Tuesday. The twinbill starts at 3:30 p.m.

Last time out: NIACC (6-8, 1-5) split a doubleheader with Southwestern on April 6. Southwestern won the opener 5-1 and the Lady Trojans took the nightcap 5-3 in eight innings.

Team leader: Sophomore Cassie Pappas (Mason City, Ia.) leads the Lady Trojans with 6 home runs and 14 RBIs. She also leads the team with 8 walks and a .738 slugging percentage.

Among the leaders: Sophomore Hailey Eckstein (Larsen, Wis.) is hitting .467, which ranks fourth in the ICCAC. Southwestern’s Ashley Brandt leads the league with a .578 batting average.

GOLF

What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s golf teams return to action Tuesday at the Ellsworth Invitational at the Briggs Woods Golf Course in Webster City. The invitational starts at 10 a.m.

Last time out: The NIACC men’s golf team placed fourth with a 327 at the Central College Shootout on April 6. Freshman Levi Fink (Wadena, Ia.) and sophomore Jacob Urdahl (Mason City, Ia.) led the Trojans with a pair of 77s.

Fink was the meet medalist at the DMACC Invitational on April 4 in Boone. Fink carded a 2-under par 70 to lead the Trojans to a third-place finish in the team standings with a 308.

The NIACC women placed second at the DMACC Invitational with a 360. Sophomore Alexandria Eckenrod (Mason City, Ia.) led the Lady Trojans with a 85.

TRACK AND FIELD

What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s track teams will compete at the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Friday and Saturday.

Last time out: The NIACC track teams competed at the Border War Challenge in Council Bluffs. The meet pitted the junior college track programs in Iowa against the junior college programs in Kansas.
