LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 7 (UPI) — An Army soldier will face assault and murder charges in a military court for the shooting death of a civilian employee at Fort Knox, Ky., officials said.
Sgt. Marquinta Jacobs, 36, was initially charged with first-degree murder in civilian court, but a federal judge dismissed the charge and transferred all proceedings to a military tribunal, Gannett Tennessee reported Saturday.
He was charged Friday with premeditated murder and aggravated assault, a news release from the Army Criminal Investigation Division said.
Spokesman Kyle Hodges said Jacobs will face an Article 32 hearing — a military investigative hearing similar to a grand jury hearing — to determine if there’s enough evidence to proceed with a court martial.
Jacobs is suspected in the death of a civilian who worked for the U.S. Army Human Resources Command who was shot Thursday.
Officers first looked for Jacobs at his mother’s house in Portland, Tenn., where they found his motorcycle and learned he had left in his mother’s car.
Police later pulled him over and arrested him without incident. He is currently being detained at Marion County Detention Center in Lebanon, Ky., Gannett Tennessee reported.
Chris Grey of the independent Army investigative agency said in a news release that investigators had determined it was “a personal incident and not a random act of violence.”
