NIACC men’s 2013 golf preview

PELLA – The NIACC men’s golf team returns to action Saturday at the Central College Shootout at the Bos Landen Golf Club.

The tournament starts at 9 a.m.

The NIACC men are coming off a third-place finish at the DMACC Invitational on Thursday. The Trojans shot a 308 in their first meet of the season.

DMACC won the tournament with a 297 and the DMACC Blue team was second with a 302.

“We are looking forward to building off our performance at Boone on Thursday,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, “with a tough test at Bos Landen in Pella at the Central College Shootout.

“We’ll be going up against some very good 4-year programs and this is a good way to showcase what we have here at NIACC.”

At the DMACC Invitational, freshman Levi Fink (Wadena, Ia.) was the meet medalist with a 2-under par 70 at the Cedar Pointe Golf Club.

“Levi was outstanding (Thursday) with his putter,” said Frenz of Fink, whose best round in the 2012 fall season was a 74. “He only had 26 putts for the entire round, which is amazingly good.”

Other counting scores for NIACC on Thursday were sophomore Dalton Olson (Mason City, Ia.) 79, sophomore Jacob Urdahl (Mason City, Ia.) 79 and sophomore Kevin Trobaugh (Gladbrook, Ia.) 80.

“I think we’ll be able to compete at a high level as we continue to work toward the regional tournament the first weekend in May,” Frenz said.
