RAIPUR, India, April 4 (UPI) — A man described as “reportedly mentally unstable” allegedly killed nine girls and women with an ax Thursday in India, authorities said.

Pandu Nageshia, 35,was jailed in the massacre of four women and five girls, ages 2-65, in the village of Barhatola in Chhattisgarh’s impoverished Balrampur district, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.

“It’s brutal killings by a man who is reportedly mentally unstable,” Balrampur district collector C.R. Prasanna told IANS by phone.

“I am too in a state of shock after visiting the village and watching dead bodies scattered outside a house where the deceased belonging to two to three families had assembled as their male family members had gone out on daily work.”

Police Superintendent G.S. Darro, quoting witnesses, said Nageshia allegedly went on the killing spree about 1:30 p.m. It wasn’t known what motivated the suspect.
