Iowa Track & Field — Larry Wieczorek to be inducted into Drake Relays Hall of Fame

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Drake Relays director Brian Brown announced today that University of Iowa director of track and field Larry Wieczorek will be inducted into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame.

Wieczorek and four-time Olympic medalist Jeremy Wariner comprise the 2013 Hall of Fame class. The pair will be inducted April 25 at Sheslow Auditorium. The induction ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. (CT).

Wieczorek is in his 26th season as a head coach at the University of Iowa. He was named men’s cross country coach in 1987, and head track and field coach in 1997. During his tenure, five individuals and two relay teams captured the white flag on Drake’s famous blue oval.

A six-time Big Ten champion and four-time All-American student-athlete at Iowa, Wieczorek once held conference marks in the one, two, three, four and five-mile runs. A member of Iowa’s Big Ten championship team in 1967, Wieczorek led the Hawkeyes back to the top of the Big Ten by capturing the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championship. The Hawkeye men crowned three conference champions on their home track, and Wieczorek was named Big Ten and USTFCCCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.

Since taking over the Iowa track and field program in 1997, Wieczorek has crowned 63 conference champions and 58 NCAA All-Americans. He was inducted into National Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1998.

Wieczorek will be joined in the Drake Relays Hall of Fame by former Iowa head coach Francis X. Cretzmeyer (class of 1986) and current Iowa assistant coach Joey Woody (class of 2002).
