BOONE – The NIACC men’s and women’s golf teams open their seasons Thursday at the DMACC Invitational at the Cedar Pointe Golf Club.

The meet starts at 11 a.m. on the par 72 course, which is 6,676 yards.

“The weather looks like it’s going to cooperate,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, “and we can get outside on a course basically for the first time.

“This should be a pretty good indication early on of where we stand in the region as all the conference teams will be there, except a couple.”

Teams entered will be DMACC, Ellsworth, Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes, NIACC and Southwestern.

Thursday’s season-opening invitational begins a busy stretch of six meets in 19 days for the men and five meets in 19 days for the women.

“I always say that we don’t want to peak now,” Frenz said, “but we also want to serve notice that we will be a contender in the regional tournament. Both men’s and women’s teams are excited to get the season underway and they have high goals for this year.

“We just have to realize that this is the first time outside and on an actual course since spring break, so they need to keep things in perspective.”

Last year for the NIACC women, Sarah Steinauer (Clarinda, Ia.) placed fifth at the DMACC Invitational with a 42-42 – 84. Alexandria Eckenrod (Mason City, Ia.) placed sixth with a 41-45 – 86. The Lady Trojans placed third out of four teams with a 354.

Last year for the NIACC men, Dalton Olson (Mason City, Ia.) tied for 12th with a 39-36 – 75. The Trojans placed fifth out of eight teams with a 312.
