PHOENIX, April 2 (UPI) — Ian Kennedy pitched seven strong innings and A.J. Pollock provided a key two-run double for Arizona Monday in its season-opening 6-2 win over St. Louis.
Kennedy (1-0) surrendered a first-inning run but then clamped down to hold the Cardinals scoreless over the next five frame as the Diamondbacks scored four times to take control.
The right-hander ended up allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out eight.
With Arizona trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Jason Kubel drove in Miguel Montero and sent Paul Goldschmidt to third with a one-out double.
Pollock followed with another two-bagger, scoring Kubel and Goldschmidt to put the D-backs ahead to stay.
Gerardo Parra went 4-for-5 with a run scored and newcomer Martin Prado added an RBI in the win.
Adam Wainwright (0-1) was tagged for four runs (three earned) on 11 hits over six full frames for the Cardinals.
