Abbas, Jordan’s Abdullah sign defense pact

AMMAN, Jordan, March 31 (UPI) — Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan King Abdullah have signed a pact to defend Jerusalem and its holy sites, officials said.

Abbas flew to Amman Sunday for a meeting with Abdullah at the Royal Palace, Palestinian News Agency Wafa reported. The signed agreement outlined coordination for the protection of all Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, officials said.

The agreement confirmed Palestinian sovereignty over all over Palestine, including its capital of East Jerusalem, Wafa reported.

Hundreds of Israelis visited Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque Sunday, Palestinian News Agency Ma’an reported.

Some visitors allegedly desecrated the holy site by drinking wine and urinating on a nearby tree.

Abbas’ spokesman condemned the visit by Israelis, saying it provoked tensions and threatened any chance of peace.
