BALTIMORE, March 26 (UPI) — The FBI Tuesday called the death of a woman passenger aboard the cruise ship Enchantment of the Seas “suspicious” and was investigating.
The Royal Caribbean International ship returned to its port of origin in Baltimore Monday after a man reported he had found his wife, 64, dead in their stateroom Sunday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
The unidentified woman was from Midlothian, Va., and been on a six-night, seven-day cruise to the Bahamas since March 18, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday it notified the FBI and local law enforcement of the death as part of its standard procedure. FBI agents met the ship when it arrived in Baltimore, the company said.
The FBI said her death as “suspicious,” the Sun said.
“It’s a death of undetermined causes,” FBI Special Agent Rich Wolf said.
Wolf said the cruise ship was off the coast of North Carolina when the husband found her unresponsive.
“The ship was working with us the whole way,” Wolf said, adding agents conducted interviews on board before passengers disembarked. The ship had about 2,400 passengers
The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore for an autopsy.
“We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the 64-year-old female guest from the United States who died while onboard Enchantment of the Seas,” a company statement said.
