NCAA: Syracuse 66, California 60

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 24 (UPI) — C.J. Fair put in 18 points Saturday and fourth-seeded Syracuse shook off California 66-60 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament’s East Region.

James Southerland provided 14 points and nine rebounds for the Orange (28-9), who shook off a long journey to San Jose — and a pro-Golden Bears — crowd to advance to their 17th Sweet 16 appearance under head Coach Jim Boeheim.

Michael Carter-Williams added 12 points for Syracuse (28-9), which advances to play the winner of Sunday’s Indiana-Temple game in the March 28 East Regional semifinal at Washington.

Richard Solomon led 12th-seeded California (21-12) with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
