Bond set at $500K for North Chicago cop

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill., March 18 (UPI) — Bond was set at $500,000 Sunday for an off-duty North Chicago police officer who allegedly was drunk when he was involved in a crash that killed two men.

Officer Terrell Garrett, 35, of Zion, who remained hospitalized, did not appear in court, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Cook County Judge James Brown said if Garrett posts bail, must wear an electronic monitor and cannot drink alcohol or possess a firearm.

Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Rusch said Garrett told authorities he had been drinking to celebrate his birthday before the early Friday accident.

Rusch said a blood draw revealed Garrett had a blood-alcohol content of 0.184, more than twice the legal limit.

Fabian Torres, 27, and Joaquin Garcia, 25, were fatally injured in the 4 a.m. Friday crash that occurred when Garrett drove his sport utility vehicle for a mile in the wrong direction on Lake Shore Drive’s southbound lanes.

Garrett, who has been placed on administrative leave, faces two counts of reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated driving under the influence, and misdemeanor charges for DUI and driving the wrong way. His next court date is Monday.
