France fines Apple over workers’ hours

PARIS, March 13 (UPI) — A court in France has fined Apple for allowing employees in its French Apple stores to work late in violation of the country’s labor laws.

Apple was fined $13,000 for forcing employees of seven of the 15 Apple stores in France to work past 9 p.m., violating laws saying companies aren’t allowed to require employees to work between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless the company provides social services or is part of maintaining the country’s economic activity, Slash Gear reported Wednesday.

The court levied the fine because Apple allegedly required workers to stay at work for as much a 2 hours past the stores’ 9 p.m. closing time to complete any unfinished work and organize for the following day.

Apple stores in Paris, Nice and five other cities were involved in the court case.

In addition to the $13,000 fine, the court said Apple would be fined an additional $65,000 if it were found to be violating the labor laws again.
