Services/Parking is Limited/Full along I-80 in Western Iowa: I-80 Traffic Backing Up

AMES, Iowa – March 10, 2013; 9:50 p.m. update – Due to the significant number of travelers in western Iowa who have sought safety for the evening from the winter storm at nearby communities, traveler services such as rest areas, truck stops, gas stations and convenience stores are reported as having limited or no parking available along the entire Interstate 80 corridor in that part of the state.

Vehicles are backing up on the exit and entrance ramps to/from the interstate in some locations, such as Avoca. When the ramps are blocked, traffic cannot exit the interstate; that is causing a backup of traffic on I-80 and preventing all traffic from moving in the plowed lane(s).

Where possible and to prevent further backups and delays, I-80 eastbound and westbound traffic should seek shelter in Omaha/Council Bluffs in the west or Des Moines to the east. Travel is being discouraged along I-80 in western Iowa until this storm ends and road conditions improve.
