DES MOINES – Iowa Senate Democrats claimed victory in blocking what they call “the most extreme agenda in Iowa history” put forward by Republicans, saying the most extreme Republican measures are “dead.”
“Iowa Republicans are trying to pass the most extreme agenda in Iowa history,” Democrats said last week. “Fortunately, many pieces of their extreme agenda are dead.”
Democrats said Republicans have introduced legislation this session that tried to abolish the Iowa Department of Education, tried to re-instate the death penalty, would have required victims of rape or incest to list their abuser on birth certificate, would have made divorce more difficult for children and victims of abuse, would have allowed anyone with a licensed gun to carry it on school grounds, and more.
At the same time, Democrats took credit for growing Iowa’s middle class.
Democrats say initiatives are in the legislature to improve Iowa schools by boosting teacher quality, invest in skilled worker training, expand affordable health care, and to cut taxes for working families and for small and Main Street businesses.
The legislature has now entered the “funnel” and the current session is about half over.

I would hope the majority party could block something presented by the minority party. Too bad, some see living within your means and not spending more money than you take in as extreme.
Living within your means legislation has not even been thought about in this House. It’s all guns, same sex marriage and abortion. Nothing even remotely close to finances.
You also have to remember what one party claims about the other is usually twisted to sound in their favor. Unless you actually can read the bill I wouldn’t trust the word of either party. Obamas continual lying about the effect of the sequestration is a perfect example. He over stressed the end of the world so badly now he has to do stupid things to make it look real. I love the four pinacho’s awards the wall street journal keeps giving his staff when caught in the lies.
You could also throw in his saying he was in constant touch with military officials while our people in Begnazi were being killed. Turned out he was to busy on the campaign trail to be bothered. Thats why I vote independent and pick and choose so I don’t feel obligated to try to defend the sick and stupid lies from both sides made strictly for reelection purposes. Both parties have gone so far right yet claim to represent the middle class when actually we are the losers in both cases. Hopefully no one party will rule the presidency, house and senate at the same time.

What kind of country is this anyhow if we can’t vote on civil rights? If a minority of people hate guys and wants to discriminate against them they should be allowed to, because in the past we were allowed to discriminate and it gave us a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Now you are telling good church going folks they are no longer kings? Well, I think they are and the country would be better off if we had a theocracy and all non Christians were put behind bars. I feel this is good and righteous and and just like blacks before them, gays are inferior.

Mr. Columbo, the increased support for SSM in Iowa still isn’t enough for Mike Gronstal to risk putting it to one. If it was, he would have no reason to continue to deny one. Duane is right.

This is a particularly obnoxious group in the House. Instead of getting better, the repubs actually seem to be getting worse.

OK-I must agree with Sicka on this issue. This kind of stuff is exactly what cost the Republicans the last election. They need to get off the tired old issues that they continue to fight. People are tired of the far right and the stuff they promote. They are no longer the majority. Pick your battles and win the ones you pick. It is a lesson they have forgotten.
It is not extreme to want to bring back the death penalty, or to be against gays marrying. Those Democrats down there that think being against gays marrying each other is so extreme will find out otherwise if they ever allow us to vote on it.
You seam quite confident… have you looked at poll numbers related to that topic? I think you would find that there is a lot more support for the issues of marriage equality than there are close minded regressive asstards like yourself out there.
