City taking bids for demolition of 14 flood-damaged homes

MASON CITY – Nearly 5 years after a devastating flood, the City of Mason City is able to move forward with the demolition of 14 more flood damaged homes and is now taking bids. The city may select the contractor on or After April 2nd.

All the work is to be completed within the same 30-day time frame after notice to contractor to proceed.

The contract will be paid using Community Development Block Grant funds.

The city has blamed red tape from the federal government for the slow-moving process of clearing the homes away.

Here are the houses set for demolition:

1. 808 N Carolina Ave: House is a one and half story wood frame structure with full basement. There are no detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos.

2. 175 N Crescent Dr: House is a one and half wood and masonry frame structure with half basement. There are no detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos.

3. 810 6 St NW: House is a one story wood frame structure with no basement. There is a detached structure on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos.

4. 420 N Jackson Ave: House is a one story wood frame structure with full basement. There are two detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos.

5. 602 N Harrison Ave: House is a one story wood frame structure with full basement. The house has extensive dry rot and salvage is not permitted. There is a detached structure on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, fences, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos. Identified ACM will be removed by a qualified contractor prior to demolition.

6. 612 N Harrison Ave: House is a two story wood frame structure with half basement. There are no detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, fences, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos. Identified ACM will be removed by a qualified contractor prior to demolition. The water and sewer services have been disconnected at this property.

7. 620 N Harrison St: House is a two story wood frame structure with full basement. There are no detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, fences, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos. Identified ACM will be removed by a qualified contractor prior to demolition.

8. 602 N Tyler Ave: House is a one story wood frame structure with no basement. There are no detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos.

9. 619 N Tyler Ave: House is a one and half story wood frame structure with full basement. There is a detached structure on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos.

10. 625 N Tyler Ave: House is a one story wood frame structure with no basement. There are detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, fences, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos and no ACM was found. The property has two sanitary services.

11. 1415 8 St SW: House is a one story wood frame structure with full basement. There are no detached
structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos. Identified ACM will be removed by a qualified contractor prior to demolition.

12. 1405 Meadowbrook Dr: House is a one story wood frame structure with full basement. There is a detached structure on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork, fences and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos. Identified ACM will be removed by a qualified contractor prior to demolition.

13. 1414 Meadowbrook Dr: House is a one story wood frame structure with full basement. There are no detached structures on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, fences, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos. Identified ACM will be removed by a qualified contractor prior to demolition.

14. 2218 S Georgia Ave: House is a one story wood frame structure with full basement. There is a detached structure on site. Demolition includes removing all structures, concrete flatwork and drives on the lot. The house was tested for asbestos and no ACM was found.

@Allen-I don’t know the actual figure, but is was a lot. The real problem is that these homes were not the cause of the floods. They just happened to be in the way. The water came from upstream and was caused by all the damn parking lots that have been built and what the farmers are doing by plowing up every inch of land. The Holcim pit is full of water now so the next time it will not be able to take the excess. I have lived in this town for 70 years and never, ever saw floods like we had. Get ready for the next wet spring.

Just wondering how much property tax revenue the city has lost from all the flood damaged property.
