Supreme Court told that kids of same-sex parents fare as well

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (UPI) — In a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court, the American Sociological Association said children fare as well with same-sex parents as traditional parents.

Cecilia Ridgeway, president of the American Sociological Association, said the friend-of-the-court brief outlined social science research that showed children fare just as well when raised by same-sex or heterosexual parents.

“The results of our review are clear,” Ridgeway said in a statement. “There is no evidence children with parents in stable same-sex or opposite-sex relationships differ in terms of well-being. Indeed, the greater stability offered by marriage for same-sex as well as opposite-sex parents may be an asset for child well-being.”

In March, the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages already legalized under the law of several states, and Proposition 8, which revoked the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.

“An issue at the heart of these cases is whether family composition, per se, affects the well-being of children and thus, provides a justification for limiting the right to marry,” said Ridgeway, a professor of social sciences in the Sociology Department at Stanford University, said in a statement.

“This core question is an empirical one and is the subject of a broad range of social science research. As a scientific body, ASA has a duty to provide the court with a systematic and balanced review of the evidence to assess what the consensus of scholarly research has shown.”

It’s the quality of the child-rearing that counts, not who does it.

I wonder how the ASA came to this conclusion. Have they had the opportunity to monitor a child from infancy to say 30 years old. With all that’s going on in the world today, I would find it hard to look at an infant, adolescent, teenager, for a short period of time and say that person will fare well as an adult. I believe that a child needs the nurturing of a mother and father to be able to grow up to be what is considered “normal” in our society. Take for example the single parent family, of which we have many. Sure, some of the children seem to turn out okay, but some of them don’t. There’s something about the nurturing, discipline, bonding of the traditional parent that I don’t think a child will get from same sex parents. I don’t know anyone that has been raised from infancy to adult by same sex parents, but I think that there will be something missing psychologically, somewhere down the line.

Well, I guess what YOU think trumps the national experts on this issue. What other issues are you the top expert at?

My guess is Allen is prob. an expert on the effects of pot smoking tho he’s never done it. The biggest experts are the non smoking juicers doncha know. They hang with the crowd that knows how our government should be run. Tho they flunked civics and don’t vote.

Yes, you must mean “The Blunt Truth” crowd. Only the real blunt truth is that everyone behind it benefits by demonizing it. Then law enforcement personal, government workers and drug counselors can talk expertly about cannabis even though they’ve never even called it by it’s correct name or ever used it.
They know what it does, just like how someone whose never had sex tells others what it’s like! They’ve never had sex, not even once, but they are experts on it.

You might want to take a good look in the mirror. You’re the product of a brain washed old wives tale era.
A boy doesn’t need a daddy to know how to become a “man”. A man isn’t about being tough. A man is about being hnmble and having integrity. About being able to admit wrongs and give and take. About taking care of the offspring you bring into the world with all the love you can give them and teaching them to be all they can be while building their self esteem. That’s a “parent and a man/woman”.
Same sex has nodda to do with being a good parent. The proof is in the kids that heve been abused and neglected by hetro couples. I know successful people who have been raised by only one grandparent. Or 2 in the case of one president…..

Exactly Allen, how many years did they do this so called “study.” A couple years? What are these poor kids like after 40 years? These so called experts have no idea.
We’ll see in about 20-30 years what happened to them.

Thanks for the support of my opinion Hank. Some sheeple don’t like it when others have opinions different from their’s. And, we all know what opinions are like. NFC

“I wonder how the ASA came to this conclusion. Have they had the opportunity to monitor a child from infancy to say 30 years old.”

“Decades of
methodologically sound social science research,
especially multiple nationally representative studies
and the expert evidence introduced in the district
courts below, confirm that positive child wellbeing is
the product of stability in the relationship between the
two parents, stability in the relationship between the
parents and child, and greater parental socioeconomic
resources. Whether a child is raised by same-sex or
opposite-sex parents has no bearing on a child’s
wellbeing.”

Why 30? Its generally accepted that a child becomes an adult at 18. The study only address the well being of a child, not whether he/she “fairs well as an adult”.

“Take for example the single parent family, of which we have many. Sure, some of the children seem to turn out okay, but some of them don’t. ” True, but you can say the same for children raised by hetrosexual, reliious parents.

“There’s something about the nurturing, discipline, bonding of the traditional parent that I don’t think a child will get from same sex parents.” Actually that is what the study reflects. Those children raised in a 2 parent, nurturing environment fair better tham children of single parent families (reguardless of the sexual orientation of the parents).

“I don’t know anyone that has been raised from infancy to adult by same sex parents, but I think that there will be something missing psychologically, somewhere down the line.”
Again this study shows that to be false.
