MASON CITY – Reports are now coming into the NIT newsroom that a pit bull attacked at least 5 people early Saturday morning in Mason City.
Mason City police confirmed the incident, which sources say took place near Washington School on the city’s North End at the 000 block of 9th Street NW at 12:35 AM.
One caller stated that a young lady has been in surgery for over five hours due to her injuries. Several others were taken to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries as well.
Mason City police said today in a press release that the dog was subdued and contained and is being held at the animal shelter pending further investigation.

It did not say there was no rabies vaccination. It said no current city animal license. Big difference. If there had been no current rabies vaccination, the dog would have been put down immediately to check its brain for rabies.

This could be old news, but word on the street is that the owners name is Val, and that he had shot up the dog before it went crazy. Now this is just here say mind you, just street talk….

It’s too late to test the dog for drugs now. It would have had to be done right away before they were metabolized.
Katie: shame on the mason city police dept if they dont drug test the dog. I dont think all evidence of drug use would be gone from the dogs blood. since dogs shouldnt have ANY signs of drugs in their system. its not like they take cough medicine.
If that’s true that dog may be going through withdrawal. It may not be the 1st time it’s been fed drugs. A dog’s body would react to drugs just as humans or other animals. Police should test the dogs blood and hair folicles. Poor dog.

From the references used by posters here it appears approximately 60% of all dog attacks can be attributed to pit bulls.
Pit bull lovers can dance all around the issue but the facts are just that – facts. Day in & day out we can predict that these animals will injure, maim & kill children and adults.
Given that, Mason City should enact an ordinance prohibiting the further licensing of any pit bulls within the city limits and should a resident bring one in the charges start at the misdemeanor level.
I know this would bring howls of “discrimination”, but people get real – this is an animal, not a person and discriminating means no more than making a choice, a choice for safety.

Just an FYI here. KAAL TV in Austin came all the way down here to Mason City to shoot a picture of the street where this attack happened. Their story got no comments and not one Facebook like or share. Guess Minnesota folks don’t much care what happens here.
Matt, I see 8 likes, 1 share, and 68 comments on KAAL’s story on FB. Their news story had more info about whom was bitten than the local news. They said it was believed they were 4 family members and they all knew the dog.

Also, saw the photos of the injuries, they look pretty bad. The worst of them was a 60+ year old grandmother. Her arm was in bad shape.

KIMT just said that the dog has a current rabies vaccination. That is good news for the victims. The dog will have to be held for 10 days and then either destroyed or whatever is decided by the police. They didn’t name the dog’s owner and didn’t say the owner had been found. They also said that homeowner’s insurance could cover the medical costs for the victims, but that the insurance company would likely then drop the homeowner if the dog was not destroyed, or some such thing.
“Could” is the operative word here. I won’t believe they’ll pay until I hear it from the homeowners ins. agent. I find it very hard to believe an insurance company would pay up. And KAAL doesn’t know for sure she has insurance. Not all homeowners do.
@Anonymous-If they rent and have renters insurance I would bet they won’t pay. Homeowners will pay the first time if covered because they are required to. Then they will cancel the policy if the owner decides to keep the dog.
It will be up to the insurance company, if there is one, and the victims’ lawyers to fight out. It depends on if the dog’s owner lived there and was covered by insurance or not. If the dog’s owner didn’t live there but the dog was staying there and the homeowner had insurance, new game. If no one has insurance, the dog owner is responsible, but what if he’s a turnip? Could the landlord become liable because he has insurance and the others don’t? A lawyer might try going after him. There are all kinds of interesting scenarios. It takes me back to a law class figuring out who might have financial liability.
I’m inclined to think the taxpayers will foot this bill. Do they sound like responsible people that carry ins..? Mean pit running around house. 3 yr. old up running around at 12:30 a.m. Who knows what else was going on there.

Renters insurance may just cover contents. You can get personal property protection, liability protection, reimbursed living expenses, and/or guest medical expenses if you live in a rental, I believe. Smart people get everything unless they can move in with family in case of a disaster, and then hope it wasn’t a tornado that wiped out family as well.

I had a residential loss with another company, and was told that my insurance had been recently canceled and I should have received a registered letter about it. they refused to show proof that I got or signed any letter. In my opinion most insurance agents should be strung up, castrated and burned. then pissed on to put out the fire. my 90yo mother lost her home in the Parkersburg tornado. she had a $125,000 policy. they offered her $35,000 cash because she didnt plan on rebuilding. what an insult

This is what i’ve heard 2 of the victims were Flores grandma,dog went after 3 year old child, the grandma saved the child but the dog took her down after she handed child to someone else.Then dog took her and tore her arm up.She spent 5 hours in surgery.This lady is a small women and weighs around 90lbs and in her 60’s.It is really hard to believe they don’t know owner.Real lucky child wasn’t killed.

The only true part of that story is that the pit IS owned by a Flores. One of the victims who is 27 yrs old spent 5 hours in surgery.
Some of you are half right. This shouldn’t be as much about the dog as it should be about the owner. WHERE IS HE?! He should have been there. He shgoulkd be apologizing all over the place for the damage HIS animal did. Even if someone comes to your house YOUR pet should be trained NOT to bite. I don’t disagree. THIS dog needs to be put down. This owner will be very sorry if he didn’t have liability insurance. I’m telling all of you renters and homeowners out there who have pets: GET INSURANCE!!! A bite incident can ruin you financially. People who sue are going to go after whomever they can and whomever has the deepest pockets. If a landlord allows pets, they’ll go after him. If a landlord doesn’t allow pets and doesn’t monitor a renter to make sure there are no pets, they’ll go after him. When a doctor screws up in surgery, the patient doesn’t just go after the doctor, s/he goes after the hospital, too, just because the hospital gave the doctor rights to work at that hospital. That’s just the way it goes.

FYI for anyone looking for insurance. I have an animal who is considered a “vicious dog” my insurance said they will not cover a few particular animals a few on the list were Rotts, German Shephards, Dobermans, and last but not least Pitbulls. It was worth checking into but no luck.
I wish the police would name the dog’s owner so the public could be on the look out for him or her.

All 5 people knew the dog, but the owner wasn’t there? It sounded on the 10 PM news as if they still hadn’t located the dog’s owner. I’m guessing the dog must have a current rabies vaccination or else it would have been put down immediately to be checked for rabies so the victims could be treated prophylactically ASAP if necessary.
The dog won’t be put down immediately you cannot check for rabies that’s why they Hold them 7 to 10 days to watch for rabies to develop
Baloney. You can put the dog down immediately and check the brain for rabies, particularly if the dog does not have a current rabies vaccination. Or, if the dog has a current vaccination, the dog may be held for 10 days to be observed for signs of rabies. Then it may be euthanized or released from quarantine.
I have been a homeowner very near this location for 15 years, and I think the authorities need to realize the true problem. I have watched the rental property numbers spread over the area surrounding Casey’s, and the owners seem to rent to any low-life trash that pays the rent with some type of government aid. Along with this type of renter, you get crime and pure human stupidity. I am an animal lover, and I feel that certain breeds of animals can cause more harm than others…any pet can attack you, be it a cat, bird, reptile, or even your cute and fuzzy hamster! How can you control the owners? Good question…more rules about obtaining a pet? How do you control that? I wonder how many unlicensed dogs and cats run our streets? Maybe landlords need to be held accountable for who and what they have living in their property. The neighborhood is going downhill fast, and I worry about my children’s safety in our own yard…mine too.

does the report state that all 60% of the pit bulls were dna tested to be sure they were pits? or did the people doing the report assume that they must have been a pit cause they looked big and mean? because of this, the report results can be assumed totally different than actual facts. even from those that love animals. to December 2008
A 2009 report issued by DogsBite.org shows that 19 dog breeds contributed to 88 deaths in a recent 3-year period. Pit bulls accounted for 59% followed by rottweilers with 14%.
Of the 88 fatal dog attacks recorded by DogsBite.org, pit bull type dogs were responsible for 59% (52). This is equivalent to a pit bull killing a U.S. citizen every 21 days during this 3-year period.
The data also shows that pit bulls commit the vast majority of off-property attacks that result in death. Only 18% (16) of the attacks occurred off owner property, yet pit bulls were responsible for 81% (13).
“The off-property statistical data about pit bulls shows just how dangerous they are.” She noted that six senior citizens were killed under these circumstances: “Two were killed while standing in their own backyard,” she said. “Four others were killed while taking a morning walk or getting the mail.”

I have yet to meet on pit bull terrier that was behaved as a pet should be. They do not heel, they are allowed to bother others, they use other peoples properties as their own open sewer.
I have said this before, and I truly mean it, people who cannot control their animals, should not be allowed to have them. Any animal who accosts a human, no matter the situation, it’s owner should be fined $5,000 and give up the pet.

Quite a few, not one of them properly trained. To the degree that when I see one, I cross the street. One was chained to a large box and refused to let me get near the entrance of a store, nearly choking itself on it’s leash. One ignorant man seeing I did not want to go near his animal, set it loose to run after me.
If there are properly trained pit bulls out there, I have yet to meet one in this city.

Geesh the owners are at fault why was their dog loose and where were they? It not the dogs fault it has irresponsible owners! Stupid people should be banned not pit bulls!
First off, I will not go near your dog. After 15 stitches as young man from “the kindest dog around”, there is no desire to experience it again.
Second, what a dog does in the owners yard is their business, what they do on my property is mine. And my yard is not an open sewer. My grass nor bushes nor beds are not some litter-box for ill-trained pets.
No matter what kind of dog one has, it should be trained to obey it’s owners commands. That includes the proper place and time to defecate or urinate. It should behave around others in a manner that will not alarm or accost strangers.
That includes barking. Constant uncontrolled barking is a sign the animal does what it whats when it wants, or the owner is insensitive to it’s needs. It is up to the owner to set parameters on when it is appropriate.

It’s not the dogs fault and I’m sorry you’re scared of pit bulls but at the same time it’s because of people like you and your biased opinions that the dogs get the undeserved rep they have. I personally don’t care what people think about the breed because deep down all that really matters is the truth. I own them I train them and I know what they are capable of yet any dog is capable of attacking they are an animal it’s their only defense. But at the same time people like you who go out of their way to make the breed look bad is what rubs me the wrong way. Ok so maybe you have met dogs that aren’t trained but that doesn’t mean that all are that way! Mine are trained in fact they go to the hospital to visit kids and they go to nursing homes to visit and opportunity village etc so you can’t blame an entire breed due to the ones you have came in contact with. If that was the case humans should be banned too cause I’ve met a few pretty bad ones so if we are pointing fingers here than nothing in this world is good

Come meet my dogs then. You’re obviously not out & about much to make such an ignorant statement about them. I walk my dogs daily all around. And yes, there’s only one Animal Control officer, she goes out on calls….well sometimes, the rest of the time it’s the police doing HER job for her. The rest of the time she sits her big butt at the shelter doing diddly squat. She has PLENTY of time & there’s PLENTY of money to hire her an assistant & for them to patrol the city in between calls. Even when she’s out on calls she won’t do anything about abused pets. Too much work for her? Then fire her & find somebody else for that job. This dog was obviously abused & mistreated & had enough & fought back. Ever seen a dog get mad & attack more than one person? There’s way more to this story, illegal activity & abuse. Bottom line, it’s the people’s responsibility not the dogs when they bite. No matter what breed & yes a German Shepard or other large dog can do a lot of damage too. After finding out about this dogs living conditions & the way he/she was treated, I’d like to shake the dogs paw for standing up for his/herself. One of my biggest annoyances is when good dogs happen to bad people.
Actually labs have put people on the hospital and so have chihuahuas and also poodles as well as many other breeds! It’s not just pits! I have trained dogs for years dogs aren’t born evil people make them that way! The people responsible for this dog should be held responsible and what were the other people doing out on the north end walking around that late? Going to rob a property or something? Maybe the dog was provoked anyone think of that? Most normal people won’t be walking around the trash end of town at almost 1 am .

Nicely said! These dogs are amazing! They just like kids unfortunately can’t choose who their parents are! It’s stupid people that get their hands on an amazing dog and torture it and ruin it! These dogs are more capable of live and forgiveness than any other breed yet the people who make them mean remain innocent while dogs get killed for their stupidity !!!!!!

Half the time people say they were attacked by a pit bull and it ends up not even being a pit bull. My question is what were these people out doing at one am on the north end in the first place? And what did they do to the dog to make it attack ? Usually a dog doesn’t just run up and attack you out of nowhere . Banning pit bulls is only going to force all the good dog owners out of town and the ones who stay will get another breed that will do the same thing! My sister was one of the people bitten, and she was just leaving a friends house at 12:30 on a Friday night and a dog bit her real bad. She lost a lot of blood and had to have surgery. She’s not abusive to animals and did anything to the dog to provoke it.

I just wanted to mention that I don’t advocate removing loving pets from families like Manly did. I would allow all current pit owners to keep their dogs until they passed away. Pit crosses may be an entirely separate issue.
Pit crosses. Hmmm. I’d love to see a requirement that cities have to DNA all these “pit bulls” before they can ban them. They aren’t even an AKC registered breed, so how are they going to prove what they are? If I had a so-called pit bull and a city outlawed them, I’d have mine DNA-ed to see what it came back as breed-wise. I don’t think the tests are that expensive. A friend of mine had her little mixed breed done for fun and it came back something entirely different than it looked like. The report gave percentages of each breed that was in the make-up of the dog. So a dog that looks like a pit bull might be mostly Boxer with a little Lab and poodle thrown in. Don’t just cave in to animal control when it comes to this issue!

Actually a Pomeranian was euthanized last summer for ripping an infants face to shreds looked line ground hamburger so any dog is capable of doing that!
My child got attacked by a poodle last summer should we ban them too? DNA tests should be done on every dog that attacks that is judged a pit bull due to looks cause I’ve been on the intake end and I can guarantee you half of those dogs weren’t pit bulls and the media jumped all over publicly criticizing pit bulls yet when the dog was proven not to be not once did the media correct themselves! let’s roll with your idea of putting blame on Animal Control. We have one animal control officer in this town. To accomplish what you are saying here and make them responsible to monitor all of these pet owners, we could set up a whole new department here in town called “The Department of Pet Services.” They could go, visit the homes, interview the owners, blah, blah, blah. Of course this will take a lot of money, I suggest that we divide the cost of this new department equally between every Dog owner in Mason City. Are you good with that Mrs. S?
I have 2 Chihuahuas, animal lover, I’d rather fight them off than a pitbull. Pitbulls are great dogs, we’ve destroyed the breed with irresponsible owners, worthless humans who participate in dog fights, and people who think they’re cool, don’t care for them properly and end up taking them to the shelter. At the end of the day pitbulls are animals bred in the beginning for protection, and to take down strong, massive animals. They are to be enclosed at all times, in a large area to run, exercised daily, and loved within the family with adult supervision at all times. Pitbulls don’t have a chance around this area, too much irresponsibility…they should be banned, bottom line.

Yeah, that’s complete ignorance on your part. I’m a responsible Pitbull owner. Don’t lump everyone into one group. We’re all individuals & so are dogs. Let’s ban bad owners or maybe arrest them & punish them for treating their dogs bad, but again, no, animal control & the police do nothing to hold people accountable. Dogs shouldn’t be held responsible for their actions, they are all raised a certain way & yes that can be rehabilitated. All 3 of my adopted dogs are proof of that.
They may be good dogs with people, but if I owned one I’d sure be Leary having it out with other dogs. They may be people lovers but not other strange dog lovers. Besides what are the police supposed to do? Grab them out of the house or attempt to take them legally while all the while the dog owner says their dog is a good dog. Pits should be banned NOT because of attacks on people which any dog can do, but be banned because these dogs have a deep seated drive to attack OTHER DOGS. Yes, a good trainer can overcome this on most dogs, but most people are terrible trainers.

Yes. I want to hear who the owner was, if it was vaccinated or not, if was spayed or neutered or not, if it had been trained for protection or not, and if it was used for fighting or not. There’s a huge difference in the type of pit bull owners.
@Katie-as of 6:00 PM on the news they still had not found the owner. They did say that all five people attacked knew the dog and when the find the owner they will probably file charges. Meanwhile the dog is in a shelter somewhere here in town and will probably be put down.
Pit bulls are great family dogs and are meant for one owner. It is how you train and treat your dog. While we are trying to ban pit bulls should we ban chiuauas and poodles? They can be mean too.
