MASON CITY – The Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force had been on the hunt for 22-year-old Terry Lee Kiefer since the morning of February 16th after he fled the scene of a fire at an Econolodge in Waterloo, Iowa.

Police say Megan Hemmer, 24, and Kiefer, 22, were manufacturing methamphetamine in the hotel at the time of the fire. The fire was contained to the room by the Waterloo Fire Department but it was heavily damaged. Inside police recovered pseudoephedrine pills, Coleman fuel, muriatic acid, lithium batteries and other items used to make meth.

A tip to Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers lead Mason City Police and Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Deputies to a rental property located at 223 NE 5th Street shortly after 3am Thursday morning. Kiefer was found hiding inside the residence and taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail on warrants out of Blackhawk County, Webster County, and Kossuth County.

At this time Kiefer is being held in Kossuth County for a contempt of court warrant in that county related to a 2009 case in which he was convicted of a serious misdemeanor count Tampering or Transport of Anhydrous Ammonia. Originally he had been charged with 3 Class D Felony counts of Possession of Anhydrous Ammonia, Possession of Lithium, and Possession of Ethyl Ether. In that case the felony charges were dropped and he received 2 months in jail and probation with a plea bargain deal.

Blackhawk County has charged Kiefer with a Class C felony count of 2nd Degree Arson, and a Class C felony count Conspiracy to Manufacture Methamphetamine in relation to the Econolodge fire in Waterloo. Blackhawk County has placed a $180,000 cash or surety bond on him.

Kiefer is also currently out on a $11,000 bail bond posted by A1 Bail Bonds in Humboldt County for a Class C felony count of 2nd Degree Robbery, and a serious misdemeanor count of assault causing bodily injury that occurred December 4th.

Kiefer also has a no bond hold for a parole violation, records show he was paroled from prison on February 20th, 2012 after being sentenced to serve up to 5 years in prison in Hancock County for a 3rd Degree Burglary in October 2010.

Law Enforcement’s media reports to not list anybody as being arrested for assisting Kiefer evade law enforcement. It is unclear at this time if law enforcement of the Cerro Gordo County Attorney’s Office plans to pursue aggravated misdemeanor Accessory After the Fact charges against the person allowing Kiefer to hide at the Mason City residence.
