Mason City Mohawk girls advance with win over Iowa City West

DES MOINES – The Mason City Mohawk girls basketball team advanced at the state tournament Wednesday night with a 72-53 win over Iowa City West.

The Mohawks set a state record for three pointers made in a game with 14.

Myah Mellman lead Mason City with 25 points on 5-8 three point shooting and 8-8 free throws.

Mason City is now 21-3 on the season and faces Dowling Catholic (20-4) in the semi-finals on Friday at 11:45 AM.

LVS, Bob Horner won his last state title and went I believe 22-0.
The next year after graduating his top tallent, he went 0-19.
Same coach! Tallent matters A LOT

LVS, to win anything at level, the 1st thing you need is quality players!

@sad- I will agree with you on that statement but, I really do not think the boys at Mason City High are any worse athlete’s than they are at Newman, Clear Lake, Manly, Charles City and so forth. Now that being said, if they are just as good of athlete’s what is next? The coaches is what. When you have a school that loses year after year with class after class you had better look at the coaches.

Big difference in playing Newman than in playing West Des Moines Valley or Waukee.

Congratulation Mohawk girls. Job well done. It makes you wonder why the boys can’t win.
