8 killed in Afghanistan Sunday

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 24 (UPI) — Several violent acts in Afghanistan Sunday left at least eight people dead, including four militants, and others injured, officials said.

In Kabul, Afghan intelligence agents shot and killed a man driving a bomb-laden sports utility vehicle on a street lined with foreign embassies, The Los Angeles Times reported. Kabul Police Chief Gen. Mohammed Ayoub Salangi said security forces defused the car bomb and no officers or civilians were killed.

Taliban suicide attackers set off three separate car bombs in two provinces near the capital on Sunday, The New York Times reported.

In the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, a suicide bomber in a Toyota Corolla directly targeted the Security Directorate, officials said. The blast killed the driver and two guards, said police spokesman Hazrat Mohammad Mashraqiwal. Another guard was injured in the bombing.

Also in Logar, a minivan packed with explosives was detonated outside of a police post near the provincial capital, Pul-e-Alam. One police officer was killed and two others were wounded, an official said. The driver of the van was killed.

Two people in another car filled with explosives tried to enter the district governor’s compound in Baraki Barak district of Logar Province, south of Kabul, officials said. One of the suspects made an attempt to flee while the other set off the car bomb, said Gov. Abdul Rahim Amin. A police officer was injured as well as the suspect who fled.

China’s Xinhua news agency reported that an officer died in this attack, as well as an attacker.

A spokesman for the Taliban claimed responsibility for the three attacks outside of Kabul, but said the Taliban was not responsible for the attack in Kabul.
