Dixon comptroller facing more charges

DIXON, Ill., Feb. 20 (UPI) — City officials in Dixon, Ill., say they want prosecutors to pursue state charges against the city’s ex-comptroller, who a federal court found stole $50 million.

Rita Crundwell last week was sentenced to more than 19 years in federal prison for embezzling money from the city, WNIJ, Northern Illinois University Public Radio in DeKalb, reported Wednesday.

After the federal court’s sentencing, state prosecutors asked Dixon officials whether they wanted to pursue their case against Crundwell.

Mayor Jim Burke said city officials want to see Crundwell back in court.

“These charges, to a large extent, they were filed at my urging and other city official’s urging,” he said. “I don’t think that the city wants to be put in a position of recommending that these charges be dropped.”

Crundwell is charged in Lee County with 60 counts of felony theft. If she is convicted, her sentence probably would run concurrent to the federal sentence, officials said.

Crundwell is being held in a local facility until a specific incarceration location is designated, federal officials said.
