NIACC women seek third straight win

CRESTON – The NIACC women’s basketball team looks to push its winning streak to three games at Southwestern on Wednesday.

Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

NIACC (15-12 overall, 8-5 in the ICCAC) have topped Iowa Lakes and Southeastern in its last two games. Southeastern enters Wednesday’s contest 0-26 overall, 0-12 in the league.

NIACC topped Southwestern 63-36 on Jan. 19 in Mason City.

NIACC sits in fourth placed in the league with three games remaining. The Lady Trojans play at DMACC Saturday and host Ellsworth on Feb. 27. The top four teams in the league host a first-round Region XI game on March 5.

“Wednesday’s game is an opportunity for our team to take a step closer to our conference season goal,” NIACC coach Kelli Terrell said. “Road wins do not come easy in this league and records do not matter when the clock starts.”

Freshman guard Chelsey Jacox and freshman post Lashae Brooks both returned to the NIACC lineup for last Saturday’s 70-55 win over Southeastern. Jacox missed the Iowa Lakes game on Feb. 13 and Brooks missed the Iowa Central game on Feb. 9 and the Iowa Lakes game.

“Our injuries this year have given our bench players more minutes on the court,” Terrell said, “and they have been playing with more confidence.

“This is when teams want to be playing their best and we believe we are getting really close to that.”

Jacox averages 14.0 points per game to lead NIACC. Freshman guard Lateeka Thompson averages 13.6 points per game and Brooks averages 11.6 points a game.
