Police bust cockfight operation

ALVARADO, Texas, Feb. 18 (UPI) — More than 100 birds were confiscated and nearly $3,000 in cash was seized after police broke up a cockfight near Alvarado, Texas, officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies also found 33 dead birds, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Some of the birds that survived had “brutal wounds,” the Fort Worth, Texas, Star-Telegram reported Monday.

Deputies visited the location of the cockfight Saturday afternoon, and observed several people running to their vehicles and driving away to neighboring property, Sheriff Bob Alford said.

Nine people were arrested on suspicion of attending a cockfight, a misdemeanor, and two were taken into custody for alleged cruelty to livestock animals and cockfighting, both felonies, and keeping a gambling place, a misdemeanor. A 14-year-old at the scene was also detained, the sheriff’s office said.
