HUDDERSFIELD, England, Feb. 15 (UPI) — A man serving a sentence in a British jail for torturing and killing a 2-year-old girl has been found dead in his cell, officials said.
Subhan Anwar was believed to have been held hostage in his cell at HMP Long Lartin by two inmates before he was killed Thursday night, The Sun reported.
A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “West Mercia Police has launched a murder investigation after a 24-year-old man died in Long Lartin prison last night. The body of the man was found by prison officers just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14.”
“Two men aged 47 and 45 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody,” the spokesman said. “West Mercia Police is working closely with the Ministry of Justice to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this man’s death but it is unlikely any further comment will be made today.”
Anwar was sentenced in 2009 to a minimum 23 years in prison for the death of his partner’s daughter Sanam Navsarka.
His partner, Zahbeena Navsarka, was acquitted of her daughter’s death but found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to nine years in prison.
