Throat-slashing mom found not guilty

SCHERTZ, Texas, Feb. 14 (UPI) — A Texas woman who admitted to slashing her 13-year-old daughter’s throat was found not guilty for the attack by reason of insanity, officials said.

Christine Caldera, 39, was instead ordered by District Judge Gary Steel to be treated at the state mental hospital in Vernon for the March 26 attack against her daughter, who has recovered, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

“It was absolutely the right decision,” said Caldera’s attorney, James Millan.

Millan said his client blacked out during the attack on her daughter, after which she cut her own wrists and punched out widows at her home.

“She was still having auditory hallucinations for several days thereafter,” Millan said.

Caldera has previously been treated for anxiety and depression, Millan said.
