Serial killer used razor in suicide

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Feb. 14 (UPI) — A razor was mistakenly given to jailed serial killer Israel Keyes, the Alaska Department of Correction admitted, who used the blade to commit suicide.

“It was learned a razor had been mistakenly issued to Keyes and it appears that razor was not retrieved,” the department said in a written statement Wednesday.

Keyes, 34, who admitted killing Anchorage, Alaska, teenager Samantha Koenig in 2012, Vermont couple Bill and Lorraine Currier and as many as eight others, was found Dec. 2 in his Anchorage jail cell strangled with a bed sheet and with a slit left wrist, the Anchorage Daily News reported Thursday.

Keyes was in “putative segregation” at the time of his death and restricted from having a razor. Corrections officers failed to get the razor back from him, officials said.

FBI agents and Anchorage police, who spent hours interviewing Keyes to learn more about his activities, have said the suicide was devastating to their investigations, the newspaper reported.
