Ex-Hoosier charged with attempted murder

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 31 (UPI) — Devan Dumes, a former Indiana University basketball player, has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot a man in the neck, officials say.

It was his second arrest this month, The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

The charges stem from a Jan. 11 incident in which a man, Keith Jones, said Dumes, 25, shot him in the neck during an early-morning meeting where Dumes was to buy Jones’ Chevrolet Camaro.

When the two men met about 1 a.m., Jones said Dumes got into the Camaro, then brandished a gun and shot him in the neck. Jones drove himself to the hospital.

Dumes is also charged with attempted carjacking and theft.

Police later found a semi-automatic handgun in the Camaro, but Jones denied it was his.

Dumes was charged last week with shooting into a house where his year-old nephew and brother were. He was charged with criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.

Dumes transferred to Indiana for the 2008-2009 season after playing basketball for Eastern Michigan University and Vincennes University. He averaged 12.7 and 6.6 points per game, respectively, in his two seasons with the Hoosiers.
