Magistrate releases accused felony home invaders back onto streets

LAKE MILLS – On Friday, January 25th, Magistrate Daron F. Fritz dropped $25,000 bond requirements and released three Albert Lea, Minnesota men being held in the Winnebago County Jail in connection with a Lake Mills home invasion.

Shortly after 10 pm on Thursday, January 17th, Lake Mills police responded to a 911 call to a residence in the 100 block of East 1st Avenue. Police found a victim at the residence that needed to be transported to a local hospital for unspecified injuries after he was allegedly assaulted by the three men who forcible entered the home.

As a result of the ongoing investigation Lake Mills police arrested 5 Albert Lea, Minnesota residents and transported them to Winnebago County Jail.

Spencer Adam Edwards, age 22, has been charged with one class B felony count of 1st Degree Burglary, and one class D felony count of Assault While Participating in a Felony. Edwards had originally been held since the incident, but was released on his own recognizance Friday after Magistrate Fritz dropped a previously set $25,000 bond requirement.

David Rodriguez, age 21, has been charged with one class B felony count of 1st Degree Burglary, and one class D felony count of Assault While Participating in a Felony. Cory Wayne Doyle, age 20, has been charged with one class B felony count of 1st Degree Burglary, and one class D felony count of Assault While Participating in a Felony. Doyle had originally been held since the incident, but was released on his own recognizance Friday after Magistrate Fritz dropped a previously set $25,000 bond requirement.

Tanelle Jessica Roberts, age 19, has been charged with one class B felony count of 1st Degree Burglary (Aiding and Abetting). Roberts was released after she posted a $25,000 cash surety bond on January 22nd. Although she was able to post the surety bond she been approved court appointed council after claiming she could not afford to hire an attorney on her own.

Cassandra Megan Slatter, age 19, has been charged with one class B felony count of 1st Degree Burglary (Aiding and Ebetting). Slater was released the day after her arrest after posted a $25,000 cash surety bond. Slater has promised to appear at a later initial appearance.

In Iowa 1st Degree Burglary is considered a forcible felony. Under forcible felony sentencing law if convicted a defendant is required to serve 70 percent of the 25 year sentence for 1st degree burglary.

Cory Doyle was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in Winnebago County last August following an earlier incident with Lake Mills police. Doyle has also been convicted of possession of marijuana in Freeborn County, MN.

Spencer Edwards is currently on probation in Minnesota following a 5th degree assault conviction in December 2012. In addition to the assault Edwards was convicted in June 2012 with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. In April 2012 Edwards was also placed on probation in Minnesota following a disorder conduct – brawling or fighting conviction. Edwards has also been charged with numerous alcohol violations before turning 21.

David Rodriguez was convicted in October 2009 in Minnesota for theft of property valued at $1,525 dollars. In December 2009 Rodriguez was convicted in Minnesota for receiving stolen property valued at $925. Rodriguez has also been arrested in Minnesota for under age alcohol possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Neither of the female suspects are listed Minnesota Court record searches.
