Wrestling: Iowa State heads east to take on West Virginia

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAmes, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team heads east to Morgantown, W. Va. to face West Virginia for the first time ever in Big 12 competition on the mat. Wrestling begins Saturday at 2 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.

The dual marks the 12th meeting all-time between the two schools. Iowa State leads the all-time series 10-1. Iowa State’s last trip to Morgantown was on Jan. 4, 2003. The dual was the Cyclones’ lone loss in the series, as the Mountaineers were victorious 22-14.

West Virginia is fresh off its first two Big 12 duals in school history. They were defeated 36-3 by Oklahoma State on Jan. 18 in Stillwater and 25-14 by Oklahoma on Jan. 20 in Norman. West Virgina’s line-up is lead by two seniors, 125-pounder Shane Young and heavyweight Phil Mandzik. Young is 7-2 on the year, while Mandzik sports an 8-11 overall record.

“There’s definitely a lot of excitement surrounding the dual,” head coach Kevin Jackson said. “Just having the opportunity to wrestle again is exciting enough for our guys. We have a chance to go out there and show all the hard work we’ve been putting in since our East Coast swing. We can’t wait for the match, and we look forward to continuing our growth and maturity.”

Iowa State is currently on a three-dual win streak, as they swept an East Coast road trip Jan. 11-Jan. 13 picking up three dual wins over Rutgers, Drexel and No. 20 Penn. Michael Moreno went 3-0 on the road trip to extend his team lead in wins to 17. Moreno, ranked No. 19 in the latest InterMat poll, won two of his three matches out east by way of major decision.
