Statement by the President on the Opening of Combat Units to Women

President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama

From President Barack Obama –

Today, by moving to open more military positions—including ground combat units—to women, our armed forces have taken another historic step toward harnessing the talents and skills of all our citizens.  This milestone reflects the courageous and patriotic service of women through more than two centuries of American history and the indispensable role of women in today’s military.  Many have made the ultimate sacrifice, including more than 150 women who have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan—patriots whose sacrifices show that valor knows no gender.

Earlier today I called Secretary of Defense Panetta to express my strong support for this decision, which will strengthen our military, enhance our readiness, and be another step toward fulfilling our nation’s founding ideals of fairness and equality.  I congratulate our military, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for the rigor that they have brought to this process.  As Commander in Chief, I am absolutely confident that—as with the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’—the professionalism of our armed forces will ensure a smooth transition and keep our military the very best in the world.    Today, every American can be proud that our military will grow even stronger with our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters playing a greater role in protecting this country we love.

I am just amazed at some of the comments I see on here sometimes. I believe that this is what women wanted (equality). They have a choice here. If they want to be in combat and can pass the test they can. If they don’t they just don’t apply. It is THEIR choice. What is wrong with that. It is not much different from what men do now. Not all men can qualify for combat or want combat. That is why we have transportation, clerks, medical units and so forth. It is a CHOICE.

Wow, once again I totally agree with you, LVS! I think this makes two times. 🙂

@my opinion-I am glad it pleases you. You will find that when it comes to the rights of people I am always in favor of that. I do not believe that government should be involved in taking away the rights of people.

I’m sure they will ask Obama and the others for this the next time we get photos of a dead blonde hair blue eyed girl hanging from some bridge or drug behind a pickup like in Fallujah

Wow, the disturbing things you think about and sickly wish for just to get a notch in your I hate Obama stick. My…..

JBJ apparently isn’t aware that our military is 100% voluntary. AND, because women are anxious to serve, it just may prevent the draft from ever being instituted again in this country. I would call that a good thing. Does he really think women aren’t smart enough to know they take a big risk when they join the military, especially when there’s a war going on? As for me, I’m extremely grateful we have strong women who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.

@Just my Opinion-and now I must agree with you.

LVS, we’re making progress! 🙂

Waa Waa Waa

Well my quess would be he is trying to do away with our female population to even up the loss of our male population. I thought him getting into office this term was to bring our troops home. Maybe those who voted for Obama should be sent over to fight ?

I’m sure his girls are all for this

Because?
