MASON CITY – A roofing team braved bone-chilling temps in Mason City this week to complete a project at the Key Apartments.

Workers with HomeWorks Central, Inc., out of the Quad Cities area, began working Monday on a roof replacement project at the Key Apartments at 600 North Kentucky Avenue. They are installing a dual fiberglass core asphalt roof there. A company spokesman said Tuesday that HomeWorks specializes in several types of roofing jobs, including stone-coated steel roofs “that last a lifetime.”

The men working in the sub-zero temps were in a jovial mood Monday as they labored in the afternoon’s frigid air.

“We have about four or five layers of clothes on,” said Tim Shutt. “We go inside when we need to and just do the best we can.”

“It really hasn’t been that bad,” replied Anthony, another man bundled up. “We’ve been staying busy.”

The team hopes to complete the project yet this week.

Jeff Gear, sales manager at the HomeWorks Central, Inc. Quad City Office, said Tuesday that his employees are just glad to be working this time of year.

“Normally, they might have to draw unemployment since there’s usually not a lot of work to do,” Mr. Gear stated. “We are one of the few companies that works year round.”

Normally, roofing work is not done in the winter months, and a couple of NIT readers had pointed the project out as extraordinary.

“The cold won’t really affect the installation at all,” Mr. Gear explained. “In two or three days when the temps hit 35 degrees the shingles heat up and seal up.”

Mr. Gear said the project was necessary at the Key Apartment because “the old roof was cracking and curling and the owner wanted it done as soon as we could get up there.”
