NATO Patriot missiles arrive in Turkey

ISKENDERUN, Turkey, Jan. 21 (UPI) — Patriot missile systems from Germany and the Netherlands arrived in Turkey Monday and will be deployed along the border with Syria, officials said.

Military vehicles and 130 containers of military equipment from Germany were being unloaded from a Danish-flagged ship, Today’s Zaman reported.

A second ship had docked, but has yet to be unloaded.

Nearly 250 Dutch troops left the Dutch airport of Eindhoven Monday for Adana.

The movement of troops and equipment resulted from a decision by NATO to help protect the Turkish border from the conflict in Syria.

Two Dutch Patriot missile batteries are expected to be operational by Jan. 26.

About 20 protesters were arrested after they clashed with Turkish police during a demonstration against deployment of the missile systems.
