Explosion, gunfire hit Kabul area

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 21 (UPI) — An Afghan police building in the Kabul area came under suicide bombing and gunfire attack early Monday, with at least two attackers killed, police said.

The incident in the Deh-Mazang area of the capital began with an explosion followed by gunfire, Khaama Press reported, quoting the security head. However, the official gave no other details.

The attack on the traffic police building was carried out by at least three people, the report said.

The BBC, quoting officials, reported a suicide car bomb went off outside the building, killing the attacker and leaving some civilians and police personnel injured.

The report said a second attacker was shot and killed by security forces. However, the fighting was going on as a third attacker continued with his firing, police told the BBC.

The report said the four-story police building is close to several police units and the country’s Parliament.

The BBC said the Taliban, responsible for several such recent attacks in the Kabul area, claimed responsibility for Monday’s violence.

The latest incident comes after a group attacked Afghanistan’s spy agency last week in which four guards working for the intelligence services died.

Militant violence has escalated as NATO and U.S. forces prepare to end their combat operations in Afghanistan by 2014.
