AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s Edward Kemboi set a Cyclone school record in the 1,000-meter run, winning the event with a time of 2:22.71 Saturday in the Lied Center. It was the second school mark set by Iowa Staters in two days of the ISU Open at the Lied Center.
“It was our first time out and you always have some good things happen and some surprises but Edward’s effort broke a mark made by an All-American and that is noteworthy,” Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said.
Kemboi broke the 1,000-meter run school record of 2:22.80, set by David Rotich in 2006. Teammate Alec Bollman placed fourth with a time of 2:29.37.
Kelly Hering earned first in the high jump with a mark of 5-04.25.
“I’m back up to where I was last year for my highest jump,” said Hering. “I was struggling a little bit with belief in myself so it was a bit of a boost to do well today.”
Cyclone throwers Christina Hillman and Jan Jeuschede both earned first in the women’s and men’s shot put, respectively. Hillman won with a mark 54-11.25. Jeuschede threw 56-05.75.
“This meet wasn’t as exciting or competitive filled as the last meet, but it was still a good meet to assess where I’m at,” said Hillman. “Last year my second meet was a big regression from my first meet. But this year I’ve been pretty consistent and I’m excited about that.”
Three Cyclone women took the top spots in the 1,000-meter run. Maggie Gannon placed first (2:53.75), Colleen Riley second (2:56.65) and Emily Meese third (3:00.12). Morgan Casey finished fifth and Madison Nagle 11th.
Iowa State NCAA champion Betsy Saina won the women’s mile run in 4:40.98. Iowa State took 12 out of the top 15 spots, including: Betsy Saina, Ej Okoro, Dani Stack, Meaghan Nelson, Crystal Nelson, Samantha Bluske, Perez Rotich, Katy Moen, Andrea Toppin, Anna Buenneke, Taylor Petersen, and Bethany Olson.
The women’s 4×400 relay team placed first with a time of 3:44.06.
Senior Ian Warner placed second in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 6.70, tying his personal best time.
Five Iowa State hurdlers qualified for the 60-meter hurdles finals, including Jordon Andreassen, Kelly McCoy, Ryan Sander, Ethan Wilkins, and Troy Walls. Junior Ryan Sander finished second in the finals with a new personal best time of 7.97. Teammate Ethan Wilkins earned fifth with 8.28. Jordon Andreassen led the Cyclone women in the finals with a time of 9.32, Kelly McCoy placed eighth.
Sophomore Nick Efkamp won the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.75.
“Nick showed us something today,” Ihmels said. “He came and ran the way we thought he could,” Ihmels said.
The Iowa State men’s miler runners were led by Alec Baldwin’s fifth-place effort in a time of 4:15.26.
Four Iowa State runners placed in the top 10 of the 600-yard run. Senior Ese Okoro lead the pack finishing second with 1:21.72.
Krista Shoeman and Dana Christensen both set new personal best times, Donnise Powell finished seventh.
Cyclone Kevin Poster placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 45-09.00. Nick Lucs also earned fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6-06.00.
The Iowa State track and field team will return next Thursday to host the Bill Bergan Invitational in the Lied Center.
