UNI women topple Missouri State, 75-52

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team toppled the Missouri State Bears 75-52 with three different players reaching double figures. The Panthers improved their conference record to 2-1 and their overall record to 7-8.
Jacqui Kalin led the team with 25 points, including six three-pointers. Brooke Brown added 12 points and Stephanie Davison dished in 11 points to help lead the Panthers to victory.

UNI took an 11-6 lead early in the first half. Jess McDowell knocked down a three-pointer after Amber Kirschbaum was able to come up with two big offensive rebounds with 16:02 left on the clock.

Kalin put UNI ahead by 10 points with 13:36 left in the first half when she was able to hit a three-pointer off a screen. The 16-6 UNI lead was part of the Panthers 8-0 run that started at the 16:02 mark.

The Panthers kept their lead at 10 points when Kalin was able to convert on another three-pointer to make the score 18-8 with 10:54 left in the half. Davison extended the UNI lead to 14 when she scored the Panthers’ sixth three-pointer of the game to make the score 24-10.

The UNI defense put Missouri State under pressure during the first 10 minutes, forcing them to 10 turnovers. The Panthers held Missouri State to just 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the half.

The Bears went on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:59 mark off a jumper from Edie Whitney making the score 29-19. Kalin ended the run with her fourth three-pointer of the game giving UNI a lead of 32-19.

Brown gave the Panthers a 38-23 lead with less than two minutes left in the half off another three-pointer for UNI. UNI finished the first half with 11 three-pointers after Kalin ended the half with her fifth of the game.

UNI entered halftime with a lead of 41-23. The Panthers shot 55 percent from the three-point line and had two players, Kalin and Davison, score in double figures during the half.

Missouri State went on a 5-0 run to start the second half, cutting the score to 41-28, but Brittni Donaldson ended the run off a jump-shot to give the Panthers another two points. Kirschbaum scored her third field goal of the game minutes later to extend the UNI lead to 49-30 with 15:04 left in the game.

Kirschbaum’s jumper was part of a 13-2 run by the Panthers that was capped off by Brown’s second three-pointer of the game. Bry Snow of Missouri State was able to convert a free throw with 12:01 left in the game to make the score 58-34.

Kalin gave the Panthers a 24 point lead with 7:50 left on the clock when she hit her sixth three-pointer of the game, giving the Panthers a 63-39 lead. After two free throws from Kalin and Jen Keitel adding a free throw of her own, the Panthers took a 66-42 lead with less than five minutes left in the game.

The Panthers finished the game with the 75-52 win, shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 57.7 percent from the three-point line. UNI forced Missouri State to 21 turnovers and held them to 20 points under their season average of 71.8 points per game.

UNI will return to action Saturday when they host Wichita State. The game is set to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
