U.S. Marshals Arrest Fugitive Sought Since 1989

Scranton, PA – United States Marshal Martin J. Pane announced today that the United States Marshals Service (USMS) arrested Richard Veboys, a 60-year old man in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

In 1988, Veboys was arrested for lewd and lascivious acts on a child, as well as other sex offenses, in Sarasota County Florida. Veboys was convicted of this crime in 1989. In May of 1989, an arrest warrant was issued for Veboys on violations of probation. Veboys could not be located in Florida and was believed to have fled the area.

In December of 2012, the Sarasota County Sheriff Department requested the assistance of the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force in locating and arresting Veboys. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Florida developed information that Veboys might be in the Scranton area. The investigative lead was sent to the Middle District of Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force (M/PA).

During the afternoon hours of January 8, U.S. Marshals based in Scranton located and arrested Veboys without incident in the 1500 block of Meylert Ave in Scranton. Veboys was turned over to the Scranton Police Department for processing. Veboys will be charges as a fugitive-from-justice pending further proceeding to extradite him back to Florida.

United States Marshal Martin J. Pane stated, “For 23 years this man eluded justice, he will now be presented to the court for justice to be served.”

U.S. Marshals were assisted in this investigation by personnel from the Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Office and the Scranton Police Department. Both agencies participate in the Middle District of Pennsylvania Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.
