Iowa Utility Association Congratulates Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy on Awards for Work During Hurricane Sandy

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa’s two largest utilities are being recognized for their work to help restore electric and natural gas service to thousands of utility customers on the East Coast who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Today, the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) presented Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy Company with its annual EEI 2012 Emergency Assistance Award.

EEI’s Emergency Response Awards recognize companies that face untoward circumstances caused by extraordinary events and that put forth an outstanding effort to restore service to the public. This year, more than 60 utilities across the U.S. will be recognized for their recovery or response efforts to weather disasters in 2012.

“These awards recognize the extreme efforts made by Iowa’s utility crews. It shows that our crews in Iowa are second to none. Iowans can take comfort knowing that when the weather is at its worst, the workers who help bring electricity and natural gas to our homes are at their best,” said Mark Douglas, president, Iowa Utility Association.

Alliant Energy sent 215 employees and 138 contract line workers and tree crew members to assist with Hurricane Sandy restoration efforts. Of Alliant Energy’s 215 employees who responded, 114 were from Iowa. MidAmerican Energy sent 29 Iowa employees and released more than 250 contract line workers and tree crew members to provide assistance in the East.

Alliant Energy employees provided assistance to Central Hudson Gas and Electric, Con Edison of New York, and National Grid. MidAmerican Energy crews provided assistance to Central Hudson Gas and Electric and New York State Electric and Gas. Crews worked an average of 16-hour days for two consecutive weeks.

“The damage caused by Superstorm Sandy was unprecedented and so was the response from our staff and our state. We’re proud to have helped out in one of the largest restoration efforts our industry has ever seen,” said Pat Kampling, chairman, president and CEO, Alliant Energy. “We know we made many allies if we ever need help back home, especially with Central Hudson Gas and Electric, who nominated us for this award.”

“All of our 29 employees voluntarily participated in the relief effort,” said Bill Fehrman, president and CEO, MidAmerican Energy. “Their hard work and commitment to restore power and help these communities return to normal is greatly appreciated.”

Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy employees who responded to Hurricane Sandy also will be recognized at a special ceremony hosted by Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds at the Iowa Capitol on Jan. 14.
