Cyclone wrestlers head to east coast over weekend

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (1-3, 0-1 Big 12) heads out east on its first long road trip of the season this weekend for three duals. On Friday, the Cyclones will head to Piscataway, N.J. to face Rutgers (10-1, 2-0 EIWA) at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

“This will be a great challenge for our team,” head coach Kevin Jackson said. “Travel and three matches in three days; we look forward to this opportunity and combat.”

Iowa State is coming off a 19-15 loss at No. 14 Oklahoma on Jan. 5 in Norman. Iowa State was pitted in a 13-0 hole before redshirt freshman Tanner Weatherman was able to turn the tides at 174 pounds. Weatherman earned 2 bonus points in a 20-5 technical fall over Oklahoma’s Matt Reed. The bonus point win by Weatherman cut the Sooners’ lead to 13-5.

Redshirt sophomores Mikey England and No. 10 Kyven Gadson followed suit, each posting wins to trim the Sooner’s lead down to 13-12. England, wrestling up a weight at 184 pounds for the first time in his Cyclone career, defeated Oklahoma’s Greg Wilson by way of a 10-5 decision.

Gadson, who was fresh off a fourth place finish at the Midlands Championships, continued to dominate in duals as he scored a major decision 10-2 over Oklahoma’s Brad Johnson at 197 pounds.

Heading in to the final match, Iowa State trailed Oklahoma 16-15. True freshmen John Meeks was unable to get the win the Cyclones needed, as he fell 6-2 to No. 10 Cody Brewer.

Iowa State will look to bounce back and pick-up its second dual win of the season Friday against Rutgers. The dual is set to begin at 6 p.m. (CST).

A live webcast of the dual will be available on RVision via www.ScarletKnights.com with Danny Breslauer and Sean DeDeyn on the call.

The Cyclones will travel to Philadelphia on Sunday for a dual with the Drexel Dragons followed by another dual with the No. 20 Penn Quakers. The Drexel dual begins at 9 a.m. (CST) with the Penn dual following at 12 p.m. (CST).
