MEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC men’s basketball team (10-4 overall, 0-1 in ICCAC) returns to action tonight at the Coe College junior varsity in Cedar Rapids. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Also, the Trojans play at Iowa Central (9-7, 0-2) Wednesday and host Iowa Lakes (8-4, 3-1) on Saturday.

Last time out: NIACC dropped a 128-72 decision to No. 11 (NJCAA Division I) Indian Hills on Dec. 18 in Ottumwa.

Leading the way: NIACC is led by sophomore guard Chris Davis (Colorado Springs, Col.), who averages 20.9 points per game and has 47 3-point goals, which leads the ICCAC in both categories. He has 55 steals, which is second in the ICCAC and fourth among NJCAA Division II players.

Stealing the show: Josiah Lee (Peyton, Col.) leads the ICCAC with 58 steals, which is second among all NJCAA Division II players.

Other NIACC notes: David Humphries (Adelaide, Australia) averages 17.0 points per game (4th in ICCAC) and 8.3 rebounds per game (2nd in ICCAC) … Humphries has 62 assists (3rd in ICCAC) and 38 steals (3rd in ICCAC) … Mike Wagner (LaPort, Ind.) is 30 of 33 from the free-throw line (90.9 percent, which leads the ICCAC).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC women’s basketball team (8-7 overall, 1-1 in ICCAC) returns to action Wednesday at Iowa Central (11-3, 2-1). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. Also, the Lady Trojans host Iowa Lakes (6-11, 2-2) on Saturday.

Last time out: NIACC dropped a 78-68 overtime decision to No. 7 Kirkwood last Saturday. Freshman guard Lateeka Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.) led the Lady Trojans with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

Stat stuffer: Thompson averages 14.2 points per game (4th in the ICCAC) and 6.9 rebounds per game (10th in ICCAC). She also has 45 assists (8th in ICCAC) and 43 steals (4th in ICCAC).

Chelsey’s in charge: Freshman guard Chelsey Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) leads the Lady Trojans with 68 assists (2ndin ICCAC) and 44 steals (3rd in ICCAC). She also averages 12.5 points per game (7th in ICCAC).

Among the leaders: Freshman post Lashae Brooks (Nett Lake, Minn.) averages 8.5 rebounds per game (7th in ICCAC) and 10.8 points per game (8th in ICCAC) … Freshman guard Allysa Meyer (Rockwell, Ia.) has 35 steals (5thin ICCAC) … Kadejah Young (Minneapolis) has 34 steals (6th in ICCAC) and has 34 assists (14th in ICCAC) … Jessica Rogers (Osage, Ia.) has 29 steals (11th in ICCAC) and averages 5.9 rebounds per game (12th in ICCAC).

WRESTLING

What’s next: The NIACC wrestling team returns to action Saturday at the Central College Invitational. The meet starts at 9 a.m.

Last time out: Top-ranked Basil Minto (Cape Coral, Fla.) won the 184-pound title at the William Penn Invitational. Minto picked up a 8-0 major decision over Iowa State’s Quinn Wilson, who was wrestling unattached, in the finals. Minto won by fall and major decision to reach the finals.

Also for the Trojans, freshman Thomas Daniels (Stockbridge, Ga.) was fourth at 174 pounds, freshman Blake Spotts (Nora Springs, Ia.) was sixth at 141 pounds, freshman Parker Sturges (Mason City, Ia.) was sixth at 165 pounds and freshman Alex Stockton (Gardner, Ia.) was sixth at 285 pounds.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s indoor track teams open their seasons Saturday at the Panther Open in Cedar Falls, Ia.

Men’s top returners: Trent Smith (Charles City, Iowa) placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run (15 minutes, 19.81 seconds) at the NJCAA national indoor meet in 2012 and Trey Taylor (Bloomfield, Conn.) placed fifth in the weight throw with a school-record toss of 51 feet, 11 inches.

Women’s top returners: Emily Burchett (Mayview, Mo.) placed fifth in the weight throw with a school record toss of 52-10 ¾ at the NJCAA national indoor meet in 2012 and Hillary Garvey (Hudson, Iowa) was 12th in the 600-meter run (1:43.37).
