MASON CITY, IOWA – In an effort to provide timely and more focused service to its citizens, the City of Mason City announced today that the Growth Development and Planning Department has been reorganized and its name changed to the Development Services Department, effective January 1, 2013.

The department has been reorganized into three divisions under the Director of Development Services, Steven J. Van Steenhuyse. “This change will make it easier for our customers – citizens, builders, developers and our elected and appointed officials – to find and use our services,” Van Steenhuyse said. “It allows us to integrate our many functions so that we can focus on meeting the needs of our customers more efficiently.”

The Planning and Zoning Division, managed by current City Planner Tricia Sandahl, will focus on “pre-development” activities such as land use planning, zoning, site plan review and other land use issues. The Building Inspections Division will be managed by Building/Plumbing Inspector Curt Sauve, who has been named the Chief Building Official. His division will continue to provide building plan review, site inspections and permit administration. The Neighborhood Services and Transit Division will be managed by Pat Otto. Duties of this division include services to neighborhood organizations, nuisance abatement, rental property and housing inspections, and animal control services. The Mason City Transit system is also managed from this division.

The Development Services Department also works closely with other City departments and represents the City to the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation, Main Street Mason City and other agencies. “We are working within our new organizational framework to streamline the development review process to make it more efficient and predictable,” Van Steenhuyse said. “Our goal is to continually improve our services, and we welcome input from our citizens and customers on how we can achieve that goal.”
