ANN ARBOR, MI – Iowa played 16 minutes of tough basketball against second-rated Michigan Saturday in Ann Arbor, but the other 24 totally belonged to the Wolverines.
Iowa lead until the 10:06 mark of the 1st half when Michigan took hort-lived 17-16 lead. A three pointer by Iowa point guard Mike Gesell gave Iowa the lead back at 19-17. Iowa had perhaps their brightest moment of the game when the Hawkeyes went up 21-17 after a wide open dunk by forward Melsahn Basabe. Zach Mccabe then took a big charge to give Iowa the ball back and the momentum.
Michigan then began to seize the momentum as it took a 3 point lead at 26-23, but Roy Devyn Marble came right down the floor and swished a 3 pointer to tie the game. Marble was fouled and completed the 4 point play to put iowa up 27-26.
That was about it for the Hawkeyes, however, as a 17-6 Michigan run at the end of the half gave the Wolverines a 46-35 advantage at the half. Marble lead Iowa with 9 pts. Michigan out-rebounded Iowa 20 to 14.
Michigan came out firing in the second half and built a huge lead of 35 points, leading at one point 87-52.
Michigan had 16 fast break points and Iowa scored 0 fast break points in the game, as the Wolverines controlled the tempo and style of play.
Trey Burke lead Michigan with 19 points and a career-high 12 assists while Iowa was lead by Marble’s 14 points.
The Hawkeyes’ record now stands at 11-4 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten conference play. Michigan is 15-0 and 2-0. Iowa plays at Northwestern next Sunday.
